Is It Ever OK to Make Fun of Dumb People?
July 31, 2009
I know that I’m a jerk from posting this video, but it’s a must see, so I’m doing it anyway. I first saw it on The Huffington Post. The people who put this video on the internet should be ashamed of themselves, but since it’s already out there, we might as well watch it.
Stuck Between Stonefox CD Release Shows and a Busy Friday Schedule
July 31, 2009
I will blog about Stonefox’s CD release show at Propaganda in a bit. I did get my hands on a copy of Still on the Wire. Um, I feel like I really need to mention that Dead Rabbits, the Atlanta band that will play with Stonefox for its Fort Lauderdale CD release show at Poor House on Saturday, is freaking awesome. It’s bluesy and loud and the singing is good. Anyway, I’m in a really big hurry right now…

Court, Dead Rabbits guys on either end, Stonefox Dave giving it to Stonefox Jordan right in the face, TIMB far right
Friday: Dooms De, Astari Nite, The Pretty Faces, and other bands and artists and sexy people
July 30, 2009
Friday night should be quite interesting for you if you’re not a couch-hugging slug, which I admittedly sometimes am. Although Moodvane’s slave will not be able to attend the following events because she will be at a casino working on an assignment unrelated to this blog, they are sure to be rad and deserve some attention.
Bands from our three different counties will meet up at Propaganda on Friday night. Dooms De Pop from Fort Lauderdale, Astari Nite from Miami and Confused as Ever from West Palm Beach will make Propaganda wish it was never spawned. Just kidding. They will make Propaganda happy that it was spawned. Thanks again to Steve Rullman for spawning it. You’re a swell guy!
Music Fest at Old School Square in Delray Beach
The Pretty Faces will be there, so, if nothing else, you will have some hot shanks on which to focus your attention.
Mike Mineo offers some pretty decent sounds. I rather like his funky little acoustic jams. I’ve never heard of him before. Maybe I’ve been hiding under a rock. Dunno. Also, two other groups with which I’m not familiar will be there: Ever So Klever and Elastic Bond.
Thursday: Stonefox CD Release at Propaganda and Surfer Film/Live Music Night at IWAN Warehouse
July 28, 2009
I’m sure that Moodvane readers are not surprised to learn that I plan to attend the Stonefox CD release party this Thursday night at Propaganda in Lake Worth. The band will officially release its second album Back on the Wire with a little help from supporting acts Surfer Blood and Atlanta-based band Dead Rabbits.
If you haven’t given yourself the pleasure of seeing this band yet, this is your big chance…well, they’ll also play at Poor House on Saturday night. But, if you haven’t been up to Propaganda yet, this might be the time to do it. Oh, this is cool. Robert Rutherford just put up videos from the January 9 local show at City Limits on his YouTube page Gingerman309. Stonefox had just returned from a tour with a bunch of homeless signs.
I’m really looking forward to seeing Surfer Blood.
Back in Fort Lauderdale on Thursday.
IWAN and B.C. Surf and Sport will put on a a film/live music event at The Bubble, IWAN’s downtown warehouse. The film, Drive Thru Australia, is a surfing flick. The Bubble address is on the promo card below. I know Dooms De Pop is going to play that night, and I think that there might be one other band. Also, there will be a raffle to benefit a local surfer who was injured in March. $5 cover. Bring chairs or blankets. Starts at 7 p.m.
Last Friday: IWAN Afterparty for Artserve RedEye Event
July 28, 2009
Last Friday night when I got back into town, Sweet Bronco picked me up from the airport and we went to the IWAN afterparty for the Artserve Red Eye event. What an interesting assortment of people IWAN draws to its events! We watched the Microdots and chatted with Garo and Yvonne, who run IWAN, Renda Writer, who’s making a splash with his WeMerge magazine, Marc Solomon, a local musician who’s bringing his dreamy sounds and stylish top hats to all of the major local venues. Good times. We particularly enjoyed mingling with our favorite little popping firecracker, Inga. It makes Moodvane very happy to see so many movers and shakers mingling in this culture-first Lauderdale venue. Nothing fosters community like face time, and I respect IWAN for bringing to life a venue that affords us that opportunity.
Moodvane Photo Galleries
July 27, 2009
So, I’ve finally organized all of my blogs and photo galleries that pertain to live music events into one Photo Gallery page called Moodvane Photo Galleries. You can access by clicking on the awesome picture of Evan below or by clicking on the tab labeled “Moodvane Photo Galleries” on the menu bar at the side of the page. I love you, Evan. You know that, right?
Ghosthunting at The Eldridge in Lawrence, Kansas
July 27, 2009
While I was in Lawrence, Kansas last week to attend a formal ceremony, I met a bunch of my best friend Jess’ other best friends. I know it doesn’t make sense to call more than one friend best, but that’s just the way that it works. On one evening in particular we decided to unwind by pushing a few couches together in the lobby and turning it into our drink table, which led to excessive unwinding, which led to relentless ghosthunting at our haunted hotel, The Eldridge.
We were disappointed to say the least that the hipsters at the hotel’s front desk would not book us into the haunted room, #506. So, desperate for a thrill, we sat around in the hallway like a bunch of college freshman goons who cling too closely to their RA groups. Ultimately we ended up stalking the hallway for about twenty minutes, cracking ourselves up over how stupid we were and trembling with the nervous energy that the possible presence of ghosts brings out in all of us. At one point we all felt that we’d made too much noise, so we ran down to opposite ends of the hallway and stood staring each group at the other as we waited for something to happen. After a few uneventful moments, we walked back down the hallway toward 506 and planted our butts in front of the door, whispering shooshs that were louder than actual talking. An unsuspecting man in black pants and a long-sleeved blue shirt appeared around the corner, pulled a card key out of his pocket and started to slip it into the lock on room 506! “It’s his room,” we cried out and jumped to our feet, circling A.J. and pressing ourselves through the entrance of his room.”
A.J. was all open-eyed astonishment as he looked around the room at the 7 wobbly figures who’d just made his couch their next stop for the night and listened to our stories about how the room that he’d booked for the night is the most haunted room in the whole hotel and regarded as a portal to the spirit world. He sat down in the oversized chair next to the couch in the small living room of the hotel suite and put his hands through his hair and said, “You’re messing with me. Who are you guys?”
Blithely unconcerned with A.J.’s sheer terror over having to sleep in that room, we started to hold a seance during which I nodded off while trying to count to 5, which might account for the fact that we never communicated directly with the spirits that haunt that room. But, I do have plenty of pics up on my Facebook that we’re analyzing for orbs and strange shadows.
If you ever go to Lawrence, Kansas, you know where to stay. Here’s a news report on the haunting: http://www.eldridgehotel.com/video/ghost_video.htm
Stonefox in New Times
July 21, 2009
Finally, local media takes notice of Stonefox. New Times did a nice music story on them. The article is very complimentary, but I have no idea what the hell it’s about — it’s either over my head or somewhere way, way off to the side of it. Um, enjoy!
Around the bend…from last week’s end through this beautiful excuse for a week
July 21, 2009
Last Thursday’s eve, I went to the Shuffle event at Brew Urban Cafe. It was fun. They threw the doors open and Twilight Notes’ DJ Vinwat’s funky, jazzy pop fusion spilled out into the air…on Himmarshee! We spent a mellow night filled with beer and conversation. Even though we stayed until midnight, I would highly recommend this as a way to start an evening. There’s Vinwat now.
Do you know Inga? Her birthday party was slamming on Saturday day and night! There were many interesting people there kicking the keg and swimming around until the wee hours of morning. If you’re reading this, you may have been one of them.
I haven’t conducted too much research on upcoming events, but I do think it’s worth mentioning that Zechs Marquise is playing at Culture Room on Wednesday night with RX Bandits and Dredg. I saw Zechs at a house concert in Gainesville last year, and they had the whole room mesmerized for an hour. They’ve got the big hair and the psychedelic guitar jams of The Mars Volta, a band with which they share a member: Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez.
It’s not all skinny guys jumping off of really big amps like The Mars Volta, but they do get pretty animated.
Also, the local arts community Red Eye event has come back around again, and will be held at Art Serve library in Holiday Park. If you’ve forgotten about the dancing ladies from last year’s fashion show, here’s a refresher:
You certainly don’t want to deprive yourself of one moment of that! It should be a fun event. IWAN is handling the music again this year, and they booked Dooms De Pop, Astari Nite, Confused As Ever and Viva le Vox. Here is the IWAN photo gallery from last year’s event: IWAN PHOTO GALLERY. Also, IWAN will host the official afterparty at its new downtown warehouse at 810 N.E. 4th Ave, Fort Lauderdale, 33304. Have you checked it out yet? It’s pretty cool. There’s the warehouse now!
If you miss it, well then you missed it. That’s the way life is. You should totally go to this Red Eye/IWAN thing on Friday. It’s like I said last year, if Fort Lauderdale were Highbury in Jane Austen’s Emma, this would be the ball. Who knows, the modern incarnation of the dashing Mr. Knightly might just be that graffiti artist who smiles at you from across the room between sips on a Red Bull, etc. etc.
As It Turns Out, There Is An Appropriate Way to Honor Michael Jackson
July 16, 2009
Thanks Kit Carson Mobley for suggesting that I check out Eternal Moonwalk. Fun. You can even submit your own video and add it to the list. Sweet Bronco will have to pull out his moonwalk.
