Last Weekend: Irish Ballads and the Meat and Potatoes of S. Florida Rock
October 7, 2009
I was so selfish and indulgent last weekend that I went out to hear awesome music and didn’t take all too many pictures of the bands that rocked Poor House on Saturday night, The Pretty Faces and The Freakin’ Hott. First, I went to Maguire’s Hill 16 to favor myself with 32 oz of what I now consider to be the most valuable, not to mention beautiful, golden substance on the face of the planet: Magners. Celtic Mayhem was playing, and it’s a fun band to watch because it mixes up classic rock with Irish ballads.
We clapped along, acknowledging the 25% to 50% of our blood that’s actually Irish, until our hands hurt and then we went to Poor House. The Pretty Faces were playing that venue for the very first time — getting the real Fort Lauderdale experience — which must have been thrilling for them. I only took this one picture (with Hannah below) the whole time because it’s been so long since I’ve seen PF perform and because there’s so much to miss during a Freakin’ Hott show – snarky jokes, rock star moments — when you’ve got a camera in front of your face. I haven’t really just let them rock my face off in a good, long time, so that’s what I did on Friday night. Was it awesome? Yes.
Jordan, Dave and Jeff, the three members of Stonefox who currently reside in South Florida — bass player Ross lives in Atlanta — came out swathed in tight denim and leather to support these bands, with which they will play Rocktoberfest at Riverfront on Friday, October 16. Tickets for that event are $20 if you buy them online, straight off of the homepage at goriverwalk.com. There will be other stuff to do besides watch these most excellent bands. Hep Cat Boo Daddies and Fourth Dimension are going to play and there will be like 30 different beers to sample.
