Greetings From D.C. And On To The Weekend
November 27, 2009
Halllloooo. Hope all enjoyed Thanksgiving and didn’t take too much abuse from family members. I’m in D.C. for the holiday, and, despite the miserable weather, I am having a good, chill weekend. I am a little disappointed because I just discovered that I don’t have my photos from last weekend’s Zombies Organize and Sweet Bronco show at Dada because I saved them to an external drive. Darn. I am so excited to finally have pictures of the fashionable, adorable members of ZO, but I will have to wait until next week to post them. I hope that I can stand the wait.
Tonight, the always magnificent The Freakin’ Hott and To Be Hated will usher Sweet Bronco into its very first Poor House show. That’s superduper cool of them. I can’t believe I’m not going to be there. At least I have the pleasure of reading Maggie’s blog about losers’ big ideas about eating crappy food the day before Thanksgiving. That’s a treat.
Tomorrow night, Fort Lauderdale’s annual Art Scavenger Hunt kicks off at Maguire’s Hill 16 at 8 p.m. If you’ve never done it before, here’s how it works: you get a map to find art works from several prominent local artists that are hidden all around town. At the end of the hunt, there will be an afterparty at IWAN’s The Bubble arts warehouse in the downtown warehouse district at 4th Avenue and 8th Street. Miami trio Raffa & Rainer, Scott Putesky, Mr. Entertainment and a top secret guest performer will play the afterparty. This year, the event will be dedicated to Peter Giovenco, the industrial metal sculptor and all-around stellar human being who passed away last summer.
Peter participated in several scavenger hunts in years past, and his work will be hidden again this year along with those of other prominent local artists. If you don’t know much about Peter Giovenco, check out Sun-Sentinel writer Sean Piccoli’s thorough article on his life and work.
By the way, go Pretty Faces. Look at this tour schedule! They’re taking over the country with this tour schedule. Pittsburgh, Toronto, Cambridge, Cleveland and so on! I knew they couldn’t be so adorable for our eyes only. Also, Ben Prestage is playing at Propaganda tomorrow night. Wish I could go. I’m dying to see that dude play.
Last Friday Night: Beards of Comedy, John Ralston and Sweet Bronco
November 23, 2009
Obviously, I went to Propaganda in Lake Worth on Friday for a night of comedy and rock ‘n’ roll. I took a ton of pictures, which you can check out here, if you like. The Beards of Comedy came down from Georgia to regale us with jokes about Applebees, being fat and out of shape and the sadness of the state of life among people who have a strong preference between Van Halen with David Lee Roth and Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. The audience’s amusement peaked when Andy Sandford, one of the four beards, read Wutang Clan lyrics with the voice and in the manner of Morgan Freeman.
The new 8-member incarnation of John Ralston’s project called Invisible Music played next. With two members from Lake Worth-based band Black Finger and the usual all-star line-up of Dan Bonebrake, Jeff Snow, Susan Sherouse, Nathan Jezek and Tiffany Jezek, the band is approaching the dimensions of Arcade Fire in terms of size (that band sometimes tours with 10) and variety of instruments and if its not careful might swell to the proportions of Polyphonic Spree. In all seriousness, they really need all of these people playing violin and slide guitar and percussion to incorporate the size of the sound, which is not only huge but brilliant. They are a joy to watch not just because they sound amazing but also because they are hot-looking people.
Sweet Bronco played its first electric show at Propaganda on Friday night, which was very gratifying for me because it proved that Chris actually was at band practice all of those nights and not having an affair. Yay! They sounded pretty darn good in my wholly biased opinion, but other people said so too, so that’s good. Check out drummer Steve Copeletti’s guns!
- Sweet Bronco at Propaganda 11-20-09, first show
If you thought that all of the hotties at Propaganda on Friday night were on the stage, think again. Check out what I spied across the bar! Did you know that Brent Indeed is going to have a big birthday bash at Propaganda on December 12th with The Freakin’ Hott, TIMB, Zombies! Organize!! and Stonefox. Brent Indeed will play too! Pretty rad.

This Weekend: John Ralston, Ketchy Shuby, Doug Stanhope, Zombies Organize and (OMG) Sweet Bronco
November 19, 2009
I can’t believe that I’m going to miss Doug Stanhope tomorrow night at Culture Room! I’ve only been anticipating his arrival for the last 6 months, but I’ve got to do the local thing for selfish reasons and go to Propaganda. If you’re going to hang out around Lauderdale tomorrow night, I can’t recommend this comedian any higher. I guess he was performing at Poor House for a while, but not this year.
So, I am personally very excited about this weekend because Sweet Bronco will play with John Ralston and the Invisible People at Propaganda with a comedy group out of Atlanta called The Beards of Comedy.
I love fat, smart guys with beards, which makes it kind of strange that I’m with a skinny guy with no beard — whatevs.
Sweet Bronco will play another show on Saturday night with the smart and sassy braineating braniacs of Zombies Organize at Dada in Delray Beach! Yay! I love it when I have an excuse to go to Dada.
Also, Miami band Ketchy Shuby will play with Fusik at Propaganda. That’s going to be a great party. Danny, the percussionist from Ketchy Shuby, showed me the video that they recently made, and I must say it’s pretty cool. Love the natural SoFla setting and the reggae hippie vibe.
I might drag my mom over to MOAFL to see the Norman Rockwell exhibit this weekend. Fort Lauderdale is officially kicking off its holiday season with the Get Lit party, part of the Light Up Lauderdale series of events, tonight, but I think that a little NR is just the thing to put us in the mood to kick off the tree buying, shopping and cooking this year.
It’s Friday the 13th, and We Should All Probably Stay Indoors This Weekend, But…
November 13, 2009
…some cool things will be happening. Stonefox, The Pretty Faces and The Notary will play at Propaganda in Lake Worth. I have still not seen The Notary — what is wrong with me??
The Hep Cat Boo Daddies are going to play at Maguire’s Hill 16 on Saturday night. That’s a fun place to catch a show — lots of seating and Magners on tap. When was the last time that I saw HPCD? It’s been a while. That might be a nice evening out. Close to home. What not.
Also, the Norman Rockwell exhibit opens at the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale tomorrow. From conversations I’ve had about it and information I’ve read about it, this 42-painting exhibit (well, there are other things like Saturday Evening Post covers, sketches, biographical information and works that he made in the 60s depicting desegregation) promises to show many, and surprising, sides of an artist whom most people think they already know.
Did anyone get up at the crack of dawn today to see the Oasis of the Seas come into port?
Poor House Is Different, But You Probably Know That. Tommy’s Still…
November 13, 2009
there.
Have you seen the new video from Tommy’s band Murderous Rampage? I would paste it up in here, but it’s got half-naked zombie chicks and they’re prominent on the frozen video screen. I’m not a prude about it, but um…
Murderous Rampage will play with Lazer Beast tonight at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach tonight and again at Poor House in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday.
So, I was skeptical at first about the changes at Poor House — where they moved the bartop clear across the venue and put in a bunch of tables where the bar used to be and opened up a kitchen in the back — when I visited the bar on Halloween, but I liked it well enough when I popped in there for a couple before the Peaches show at Revolution last weekend. It’s cozy and a bit classy. It almost feels like an Irish pub or something.
Pictures From Last Weekends Shows Are Up — Peaches, Quiet River, Retrocities
November 10, 2009
So, we — and by we I mean Sweet Bronco, Misha and I — went to see Peaches on Friday night. I knew it was going to be a bit of a headache when we were standing in line behind a fetishized version of Rainbow Brite. I wondered to myself, “does my taste in music veer so far toward the immature that I am once again (it was the same scene at The Faint) going to be subject to mosh pits and kids pushing through the crowd to one-up everybody on earth as a way of letting out that post-adolescent angst?” The answer, of course, was yes. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I even had the unique opportunity to practice patience when someone threw a drink on me. Funny how nothing like that happened at the Bon Iver concert last summer. Anyway, Peaches was awesome. Here are the pics from Peaches.
Also, Quiet River, a local band, was awesome at Propaganda last Saturday night. I love this band. Here are the pics from the show. I’ll tell you more about why I adore QR so much later. Pictures of Quiet River at Propaganda 11-07-09.

Peaches Last Night! Quiet River Tonight!
November 7, 2009
Peaches schooled us last night at Revolution! She was rad, much radder than her audience. I need to stop liking artists with young demos; these youngsters start mosh pits — at a Peaches concert! — and throw drinks toward each other, that, on account of their untrained arms, don’t always land where they’re supposed to. Am I bitter that I was in the path of a wayward flying drink (behind the intended object) last night? Perhaps, but at least a bunch of kids in a red jeep yelled “F**K you” at me today while I was walking on Victoria Park Road! Yay!
We’re going to Propaganda tonight to see Quiet River! Yay! I am very excited to see this band again, as you know if you read Moodvane. If you’re hanging around Fort Lauderdale and you have nothing to do, you might want to pop over to the Jib Room (on Oakland, right around the corner from Culture Room) to say hi to Travis. He’s putting on a night with live music. Should be cool! That’s what we’d be doing tonight if we weren’t headed up to Prop.
Pics from The Bubble Halloween Show
November 5, 2009
Halloween was ridiculous and fun, as it should be, thanks to everyone at The Bubble, especially Yvonne, Garo, and Travis — thanks for wearing what someone later referred to as a “smock” and clown make-up. I took a few pictures of bands and people. SEE HALLOWEEN PICS!
Pulp, Peaches and Halloween Promises
November 3, 2009
Halloween at IWAN’s The Bubble was amazingly fun. I will put up more pictures from the event later this evening, but you should know that it looked a little something like this:
I wanted to post right now just to mention two things:
If you’re not reading Bob Norman’s blog right now, you should be. The Daily Pulpis on fire with updates about this Scott Rothstein story that he’s been blogging and writing articles about for the last couple of months. It’s very intriguing, and all kinds of drama is said to be happening on Las Olas Boulevard right now.
Also, I got an e-mail on my Facebook that Revolution is unloading tickets for this Friday’s Peaches concert 2-4-1. Follow this link to see the score with that!
