The Mid-Week Nightlife at Monterey and Propaganda, and WTH is a Goolsby?
February 22, 2010
Last weekend was a total flop for me. I was so wiped out that the only thing that I had the energy for, besides watching the Winter Olympics, the entire weekend was a quick stop at The Bubble for the Art’s Sake event for like 30 minutes. It was pleasant though, and my friend Misha and I were particularly taken with Olga Volkus’ works.
While I was talking to Protoman a few weeks back, he mentioned Jasper Delaini of local group The Secondhand Outfit quite a bit. To me, The Secondhand Outfit has always been that immensely popular group that slams out Poor House every now and then when I’m trying to have myself a peaceful little evening. Well, I’m the big ignoramus who overlooks things a little bit different than what I’m accustomed to sometimes, but I can’t excuse myself for overlooking this rawness and eloquence anymore. Jasper’s other incarnation is as DJ Sensitive Side, and as such he spins the widest variety of music I could possibly imagine at The Monterey Club on Tuesday nights.
I think that I will take Propaganda booker/promoter Steve Rullman up on his recent suggestion that I check out Wednesday night’s show at Propaganda. The evening throws three touring bands together with one local act.
So, former Stonefox drummer Jeff Rose joined up with Paul Simundich and, I believe, two other former members of Quiet River to form Goolsby, which will play its first show at Propaganda in Lake Worth on March 15. I don’t know what a Goolsby is, but I don’t care. I’m just psyched to see the band formerly known as Quiet River back in action.
Hukilau Countdown Party tonight — looks fun. Think I’ll go to KMP w/ SMP.
February 20, 2010
I totally forgot about this event, but it looks pretty fun. Over by there at the Mai Kai they will have those there Hukilau Countdown Party shenanigans tonight. You must be careful if you go drinking at Mai Kai because some of their drinks are much stronger than you may be used to, OK? They will have some musical performers like Tallahassee surf rock outfit The Intoxicators and Gypsy Blue. Very nice good time. They start at 6 p.m. Free.
I think I’m going to try to go to this Kill Miss Pretty/SMP show at The Seamonster club tonight — that’s the one on the south side of the new river right next to downtowner saloon. Colleen Dougher over at City Linkmeister wrote up all of the details and relevant background details, about Squeeze nightclub, etc., in swirly prose.
This Weekend: I’m Bored! Wah! What Should I Do????
February 18, 2010
Friday
Propaganda or The Bubble, right? Right.

Protoman, Dee Dubbs Jabrjaw at Propaganda
I don’t typically go out for local hip-hop or rap shows, but this kid Protoman struck a chord with me recently. I was just checking out his MySpace at first, but then I quickly noticed that he was a consummate blogger, a social media junkie and that he had some cool songs. I wrote an article about Fort Lauderdale rapper Protoman for New Times this week. I think I’m probably going to try to head up to this show at Propaganda on Friday. Maybe I should have Sweet Broncoface get up on stage and battle with him. That would be hilarious. Chris won’t go. He’s got better things to do than to hang out with me. Sigh!
Saturday
Kill Miss Pretty and Daisy Berkowitz (SMP)at Squeeze (this is Seamonster Nightclub, the former Squeeze). They will celebrate the release of their single “Judy Garland” and SMP will play it with them. I bumped into SMP last week, and he said that he was probably going to play a Spooky Kids track too. So, rad.
For Art’s Sake at The Bubble, Friday and Saturday
The Bubble will host a 2-day local art show with 16 area talents exhibiting their wares. It’s called For Art’s Sake, and it starts at 6 p.m. both days. Twilight Notes DJs Esoteric and Adam Foster will spin at the event. The live music will come from the mouth and hands of Alexander — that’s Ryan Alexander, who’s been booking acts and playing intimate sets on Friday and Saturday nights at Brew Urban Cafe Victoria Park. I was in there at like 11 p.m. on a recent Friday night to finish up some work (yes, my life is that exciting!) and they had an awesome little jazz set going on. It’s five bologna if you don’t drink and ten bologna if you do.
Saturday: Tonight’s Happenings — It Will Be a Wild One
February 13, 2010
So, I already mentioned that the famous D-Knuckle will play tonight at The Monterey Club. Will be crazy as evidenced by the photo below:
But, what the heck else? Obviously, we’ve got two festivals raging in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The Blues Festival is holding down the Riverwalk in the area of Downtowner Saloon and The Greek Fest is going off in Victoria Park at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. Those should be fun. Not sure if we’re going to pop over there or what.
We’ve got a full plate of potential outings for tonight and some tough decisions to make.
It’s an all-girl art exhibit tonight at IWAN’s The Bubble warehouse, and I would love to spend my entire Saturday afternoon sitting here writing about “The Trouble With Girls”, but someone has already done a fine job describing it. That special someone is Travis Newbill, who wrote it up for the New Times.
Also, Auteur Explosion is happening tonight at Cinema Paradiso, and it’s all about hip-hop art and music. Check out this video for Protoman and DJ Immortal’s “Wake Up”. Fort Lauderdale’s Protoman will play a special show next Friday night at Propaganda with Toki Wright and Dee Dee Dubbs & Jabrjaw. Also, heads up for the story that I wrote about Protoman. It will come out in New Times this week.
The music portion of the evening starts at 9:20 p.m. and runs to 11 p.m., and the line-up includes Mecca and Laguardia, Protoman, Sunflower, Brimstone127 & The Brass King and Scratch Academy Turntablism with DJ Immortal, DJ Hurricane and DJ K-Razor. Details can be found at Cinema Paradiso’s page for the Auteur Explosion.
Road Nods — Pine Hill Haints Tonight at Poor House 11 p.m.
February 12, 2010
I have a newfound love for the washtub bass and the washboard. I think Boise Bob & His Backyard Band did it to me a few weeks ago. An out-of-town country folk band called the Pine Hill Haints is coming all the way down here to the crustiest edge of the continental United States to play for all of us at Poor House tonight. Isn’t that sweet? If you hate lame country songs about how people have rigged their oversized pick-up trucks with stadium lights and tritely-delivered tunes about wasting away in nostalgia over lost love, you’ll probably like Pine Hill Haints. They’re not like that at all.
D*ck Knuckle — Two Saturdays In a Row — Missed ‘Em Last Week? Catch Them This Sat
February 12, 2010
urday night at The Monterey Club at 9 p.m. The crowd at Lauderdale’s Poor House was going absolutely bonkers for the scintillating 7-some comprised of members from Zombies Organize, The Freakin’ Hott and TIMB last Saturday night. We showed up after The Bubble event and had to worm our way through the flesh wall to get close enough to the stage to get our faces rocked off. Maggie was looking particularly hot. A new haircut, me thinks, and the usual wow factor added up to a very glamorous effect.
ZO’s Mary and Bobby were the picture of wedded bliss at the keyboards — matching Converse and all.
TIMB had tons of rock star moments at the front of the stage. Aaron from Freakin’ Hott was exactly as he always is, which is certainly for the best. Laura and her star guitar were truly outrageous.
And, of course, Dean the machine, obscured from view by the aforementioned visual madness, drove the crazy thing from his drum kit.
They even have a little symbol for D*ck Knuckle, which is basically a bird thrown at half staff. It’s hawt, hawt, hawt. Go. Saturday. 9 p.m. The Monterey Club. It’s that place at the motorcyle shops down there on south Federal just north of 595 right next to the roller skating rink.
Ciao.
Saturday Night: Acoustic Sets at The Bubble and Rocking Rock by Freakin Zombies Timb Collaboration
February 11, 2010
Last Saturday night was easily my favorite night of live music in quite some time. A quick stop off at The Bubble to see Trav (Travis Newbill) and Evan (Catalonia) turned into an all-night affair. There was a warm energy in the air, a sense that everyone had a bit of time to kill and the inclination to be exactly where they were. Evan played and played and played, playing his own material and then cracking up his audience with twists on and bastardized versions of popular songs, such as Radiohead’s “Creep”, that freshened ‘em up a bit.
Trav was out of control. I did not know that I had such a secret talent among my acquaintance. He’s got an arrestingly beautiful voice and a bevy of original songs that I have yet to fully explore. His amiga Natasha painted him during his set, which was erotic and innocent at the same time, and then she started painting everyone else in the room. Was rad. Can’t wait to see Trav play again!
Chris played after Trav, performing a few original songs like Morning Night, my fave, and a coupla his favorite covers. He’s all painted up at this point, as were many of us when we headed over to Poor House to check out the D*ck Knuckle show.
Retrocities and A Hunter’s Pace at The Monterey Club
February 9, 2010
Two of BPB’s most promising young bands played together at The Monterey Club last Thursday night, and drew a nice little crowd of 30 or so peeps — even though neither band is from Lauderdale. Pompano Beach-based three piece Retrocities played first, and the dark mood of the band’s music was certainly a good fit for the dark room. Ian Curtis does, at moments, seem to be channeled from the dead, but, hey, that’s hard to do and they sound good. I like me some Retrocities — even though I don’t know how to pronounce the band’s name. Is it “retrocities” like “atrocities” or “retrocities” like “retro” and “cities” put together?
A Hunter’s Pace, I also enjoy. This is the second time that I’ve seen them — the first was at Propaganda a month or so ago — and I liked them better this time than the first. They’re growing on me, and I particularly like a couple of the songs that they play live, but they’re not up on the MySpace. Frontwoman Sheila Hafsadi is a ball of personality and energy. She’s got a cutesy fashion sense and should seriously look into patenting her dance moves — she puts a unique stamp on the side to side wiggle that I’ve not seen before. Noah and Ben Garbarino are comparatively sedate, and you already know all about Paul. They’re playing at Propaganda‘s Sonic Reducer party TONIGHT. You can check ‘em out for yourselves.
Look How Cool I Was
February 9, 2010
Hey suckers! Look how cool I was for like 30 seconds last Thursday night when I posed like a big poser with the Paul Simundich at the Retrocities/A Hunter’s Pace show at The Monterey Club. I had a blast watching the show and will post some photos of the bands soon. Saturday night’s shows at The Bubble and Poor House were also insane as you shall see.

Court holds her breath and poses with Paul Simundich of local bands A Hunter's Pace and Quiet River, which will soon change its name.
Have you heard Paul sing “Anchor”??? It’s fab!
Update on Tonight’s Musical Happenings in 954, That’s the Area Code for Broward
February 6, 2010
I left quite an ugly little scratched out page on top of my blog for two days, and I apologize for that. The new musical line-up for The Bubble’s event tonight is Travis Newbill of Trav and Evan Rowe of Catalonia, two of the zaniest people of my acquaintance. Still trying to figure Evan out? Don’t. I’ve known him for fifteen years, and I can’t. Listen to him sing, though. Not too many people can sing like Evan. If you don’t feel like watching an entire video, at least go to 4:05 on the video and listen to the last 20 seconds. It’s kinda funny.
Evan and Trav are going to play around 10 p.m.
We’re heading over to Poor House after to catch D*ck Knuckle, Freakin’ Hott and TIMB. Doubt we will even attempt that big concert over at the beach. I would like to see the beach all lit up and buzzing with people, but I also do not want to give myself a headache.
