We’re Going to Dada Tonight, You?

Nowish, heading up to Dada tonight for Guy Harvey! Not sitting around the house tonight. Who is New Coke?  Guess I’ll find out.

Looks Pretty Hawt!

Hallo Amazibots!

Oh my Henry, people, it has been a long, long time since I’ve favored your computer screen with my useful information peppered prose. In the last couple of weeks, I’ve missed a lot of shows (boo!) that I’m sure were quite excellent. What can I do? I’ve been so tired and self-absorbed lately. Still, I wanted to put a bag over my head and run away last night when I bumped into a smiling Julian Cires of Lavola at the entrance to Propaganda. Missed his awesome band’s CD release party and recent appearance at Digital Love at the Green Room — a weekly Thursday night party that I have yet to attend (double boo!). We’ll catch them all soon. Last night, went to the Secret French Kissing Society (amazing!), with Dewars (hawt!), Ralston (adorbs!), Shmee (scrumptious!) and Bobby Yapkowitz (delightful!) from Heavy Boots.

Off to see Ketchy Shuby and Fusik (just back from a 10-day European tour) at The Art Institute.  Here’s Fusik playing background for a USA v. Poland breakdancing competition in Poland. Pretty sweet gig, right?

Also, I can’t stop watching this:

New Stuff – Lauderdale…Seriously

Happy Valentines Day to all of the brown eyed girls who have made life so interesting for me this year! I spent time with a couple of them last Friday night at Laser Wolf . Finally, Laser Wolf has opened. Score! The venue was opened by three Lauderdale-bred young men and, if the opening weekend was any indication,we can expect DJs, bands and a local crowd. 3 a.m. rolled around way too fast. Gotta pop back in this week!

He's got laser beams for eyes!

We weren’t able to make it to Propaganda last Friday night for the Lavola CD release show, but no worries as it turns out. Lavola will play this Thursday night at Digital Love, the weekly dace party at Green Room at Revolution. That’s so amazingly convenient. Hopefully they will bring along a few copies of their new CD, Leaving Paris.

Also, I did pop by The Collide Factory in FAT Village for a few on Thursday night. It’s a beautiful space, lotsa promise. We saw Ryan Alexander play a solo set. Can’t put together the puzzle of what this place is all about. It will require another visit, at least.

Benefit Show for Everymen’s Cowboy Tonight

Unarguably the most important local event happening tonight is the benefit show at Propaganda for Everymen‘s washboard player Cowboy. New Times Music Editor Reed Fischer interviewed Everymen’s Sergio Witis, who discussed his bandmate’s condition and encouraged reflection and unity among local live music scenesters as they come together to support Cowboy. Check it. It’s a great read. Proceeds from tonight’s event go toward hospital bills. Line-up below.

Tonight & Every Thursday: Digital Love at Green Room (that’s @ Revolution)

Do you like to dress up in awesome clothes and move to music that lame people have never heard of? Yes. Check out this party. Digitallove, a weekly dance party put on by MIG and Andie Sweetswirl, starts up tonight at Green Room. What kind of music will they play? “’80s/indie/rock/electro/dance/lounge”.

Hawt Dancing Fort Lauderdalians Loving Digital Music

Green Room is that club between Voodoo and Revolution. It’s $5 for 18+ type persons and free for the 21+ hotties. Rad. If the promo I hold in my hand tells truth, hipster juice (PBR) will be $2 (ONLY!) and shots of toilet hugger juice (Jack Daniels) will be $5 (is that cheap?) and other drinks will be cheap with three exclamation points. That’s serious. The party starts at 10 p.m.

Last Weekend: Distractions and Bite-Sized Chunks of Sweetness

Last weekend, the universe offered up many distractions and a few bite-sized chunks of sweetness. Recently, I reviewed ROK:BRGR, the new late-night burger/bourbon/craft beer bar in Himmarshee, for City Link, and I was particularly taken with the Australian Burger. As you can see in the photograph below, it’s quite large! I bumped into photographer Kara Starzyk while I was there, and she documented my burger consumption trials and errors. What a stellar lady! I admire her cool demeanor.

I cannot rock this burger

But, that was not the sweetness that Friday night offered up. We did something that would have been inconceivable two years ago: we ate a burger at Poor House. It was good! Weird. We went to watch local hotshot multi-instrumentalists Dan Bonebrake and Greg Lovell parade their cherished musical partnership as they swapped out the front spot. Jesse Dalton (how many bands is he in?) drummed to complete the trio’s sometimes countrified, sometimes slamming rock sound, which for a reason I do not know because I have never inquired they call Grey & Orange. They must have known that I was coming because they played Gouge Away, my favorite Pixies song. Thanks, rock stars! Distraction: Is it just me, or does Dan Bonebrake always look like he just emerged from an ice cold spring? He must be the cleanest-looking person I have ever seen.

Grey & Orange Poor House, Jan 21

On Saturday night, we headed up to Lake Worth’s Little Munich for the John Ralston, Evan Mui, Chris Horgan, Sam Friend show. Good thing I caught Ralston’s show the week before because I was seriously distracted, as any human being with the fear of God in her would be, by the presence of this charming little fellow on the shelf.

I Can't Stop Looking at You

Fortunately, the serene and focused individual Monica McGivern was there to photograph and write up the show for New Times. And what a thorough review it is!

D*ck Knuckle’s presence at the nearby Propaganda nightclub called to me, so I headed over and took a spot in front of the stage.

Beautiful vitriol

It was a good vantage point for watching Maggie and Mary rip each other new ones (the meaner they are, the happier you feel) while getting my face rocked off. This was the highlight of my week, which is pretty much standard for any DN set. Distraction: Aaron’s fashion. Tight light jeans and a leather cap is a combination very few can pull off. He can. Good job!

I cut off his feet. Lame!

Little Munich Show – Thanks, Steev

Yesterday, I paraded my ignorance about tonight’s cool happenings right across this blog page. Rullman directed me toward this event (Have you seen the new thehoneycomb.com page? It’s looking nice). I knew that I overlooked something. Tonight at Little Munich, Kevin Popejoy, Your Umbrella and Funcrusher.

Kevin Popejoy, Your Umbrella, Funcrusher at Little Munich

What’s a Funcrusher, right? Read Arielle Castillo’s New Times preview of the show. It’s informative and there’s a video. Yay!

What the kids, the cool kids, were and are up to…

Miss me yet? Things have been quiet over here for a good long while, but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t been out and about drinking in 2011′s tone, scoping new bars and checking the pulse of area bands. Hear Hums‘ pulse is very strong, for example. After seeing them at the Dewars’ house party a few weeks ago, I’m officially crushing. They’re playing Little Munich next Sat, the 29, with Sumsun.

Hear Hums at Dewars winter show

Last weekend was sweet. Chris and I went to Dada on Friday night for the Grey & Orange and John Ralston show. The audience was packed with all stars like Freakin’ Hott’s Mag and Aaron, Ryan Alexander, Copelleti (who hopped up to drum on a couple of Ralston songs), Dan Bonebrake and Jesse Dalton (both backed up Ralston for the last few songs of his set), Keith Michaud, Steev (on the tambourine) and the always enigmatic Jon Wilkins. I kicked myself all night for not bringing my camera. When I got home, I found my camera in one of the 50,000 compartments in my purse. Annoying! Ralston, who told the crowd that it was his first solo performance in a year, put on a most eggsellent show, performing songs from Needlebed up to his soon-to-be-released album Shadows of the Summertime.  There is a huge difference between a performer/band to whom you give your attention and a performer/band that commands your attention. Ralston is def a commander.  Tonight: >Grey & Orange will play at Poor House in FORT LAUDERDALE with Harvey and the Buckets. How does that make you feel? Nice? I don’t think that that Pete Stein guy is gonna be there though. At least, that’s what Harvey wrote on Grey’s FB wall.

Grey & Orange and Harvey and the Buckets

This weekend: Ralston’s playing again this Saturday at Little Munich with Evan Mui, my Chris and a dude named Sam Friend.  The Freakin’ Hott will play in D*ck Kuckle at Propaganda with Everymen, Radioboxer, Spred the Dub on Saturday night too. So, I’ll probably go back and forth. Why not?

Trav, Laurie, Bristol, Todd and Mr. Brady

The Best Picture Ever - How many legs does Trav have?

Last weekend: Saturday night, we went to the Everything Is Alive event at The Bubble, where we saw Travalonia (band), Tim Hicks (Orlando-based artist/musician), Mike Mineo and a very cute Brooklyn couple/musical duo Laurie and Todd, who announced onstage that they are engaged. Can you imagine anything more romantic than two love birds in a band together, singing to the audience and, secretly, to each other at the same time? I can’t. Here they are. Laurie’s got the pipes and her boots were super cute too.

Love Birds Coo. Audience Enjoys.

What’s happening tomorrow night? Seriously. I don’t see anything.
