Holiday Parties, Rad Shows and Zits

Please exsqueeze me for the uselessness of my blog this season. This year, I literally encountered a creature that can only be described as a goblin, and it robbed from their storeroom the stockpiled sources of my life’s joy. Out of necessity, I dedicated my thoughts and energy to restocking for the winter and 2011, so going out and about has not been big on my list of things to do. Of late, my thoughts have turned from goblins to elves, and I am feeling much jollier now. Consequently, I am trying to make my plans for the weekend that starts in, oh, 5 hours, which requires CEO-caliber decision making skills because stages and venues are going to be slammed with righteous action tonight and tomorrow.

Tonight and all day tomorrow, Zitfest (this scene is fittin’ a pop) goes down at Lake Park venue Orange Door. That’s at the northern end of Palm Beach. I’ve never been there, which probably has something to do with the fact that it’s located 60 miles from my home. The line-up consists of all of those effortlessly cool Palm Beach bands that have been breaking out in the last year and out-of-town acts that they like. BPB New Times Music Editor Reed Fischer, who recently seduced an entire bar full of people with a  karaoke performance of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret”, talks to the Jameses (which isn’t always easy) and previews Zitfest over on County Grind. Not sure how much of the festival I’m going to be able to attend. I think that I might do Saturday afternoon and evening. Dewars!!! Here’s the two-day festival’s lineup.

Goodrich, Mineo and Fusik tonight at Pineapple Groove

Also, tonight, Fusik, Mike Mineo and Rachel Goodrich play together at Pineapple Groove in Delray Beach. Fusik and Mineo? Curious pairing. This is another venue that’s new to me. I’m thinking that I might pop by.  I’ve heard very good things, but I’ve never seen Goodrich perform.

Tomorrow night is Santacon in Fort Lauderdale. As much joy as it brings me to see dozens of people running around in santa costumes, I might have to pass on it. They’re meeting at Briny during happy hour, then going to Bierbrunnen via water taxi, then back to Las Olas to take over the streets. Sounds cute! Vixen and Calendar Editor Mickie Centrone spells out Santacon details over at BPB.

Travulous and Friends Spread Cosmic Cheer

Also, there’s gonna be a holiday market and live music event at The Bubble tomorrow. I told you that there was a  lot of stuff going on! Geez! Trav is going to perform an “intergalactic musical”. This is probably as confusing (in a good way) as it sounds. I’ll leave it to God’s gift to humanity, Erica Landau, to explain over at BPB’s Calendar. I’m probably going to go to this event on Saturday. Yay!

Also, Ben Prestage and Sweet Chariots at Lake Worth’s darling little German bar and live music venue Little Munich tomorrow night at 10 p.m.

100 Cameras Photography Exhibit & Fundraiser at 33rd Street Wine Bar

There’s a TON of stuff going on this weekend. I know that. You know that…I hope. Art Basel, anyone? I feel tired just thinking about it. Dancing outta doors at JAMS on Sunday! I’m just going to mention one little thing that’s happening in Fort Lauderdale because it’s pretty cool. Lindsey Whiddon was just chatting me up about 100cameras, an organization that’s putting on a photography exhibit and fundraiser that will be held at 33rd Street Wine Bar tomorrow night  from 6:30 to 9:30.  There will be some free wine too! Free?! What?! Here’s the event link!

Linds says:

“It’s for a non-profit that two of my girl friends started in college that teaches kids in poverty-stricken areas how to use cameras to document their lives for one week. Then the organization sells the prints and 100% of the proceeds goes back to that community’s partner organization.”

Thanksgiving Weekend Parties, Shtuff

I would be grateful for this post-Thanksgiving awesomeness, but I will not be able to partake because I will be chilling with the fam all weekend. We finally found a Charlie Brown movie after flipping through channel after channel of court and reality television shows. Who wants to watch that junk on Thanksgiving weekend? Not me. This is what I’d do if I weren’t in Mobile tonight.

This, I wish I could go to: The Dewars, Hear Hums and Sumsun at Little Munich on Friday.

Hear Hums, The Dewars, Sum Sun at Little Munich

Were I not far, far away, I’d probably also pop over to Propaganda to check in on Fire Zuave and to see what this Wolfbreaker Orchestra is all about.

Fort Lauderdale’s annual Art Scavenger Hunt is going down this Saturday, November 27. Starts at Maguire’s Hill 16 at 8 p.m. and the afterparty will be held at IWAN The Bubble.

JAMS Afternoon Indie Dance Party at McSorley’s

POSTPONED!!!

The Jams indie dance party set for this afternoon has been POSTPONED. Instead, Jams will go down next Sunday at the same location, McSorley’s. There’s some kind of house party going on at someplace called 101. The address and info can be found on the Jams Facebook page.

Bumped into DJ Esoteric at the David J show at Monterey Club last night. We chatted about JAMS, a monthly indie dance party at McSorley’s that’s set to start tomorrow.

JAMS - Monthly Indie Dance Party on the Beach

McSorley’s brick-walled second-story patio is fun even when there’s nothing so potentially rad going down. Do you know where it’s located? No. Right across the street from Primanti Brothers at Sunrise and A1A. Do you know what time the party starts? No. 2 p.m. DJ Mig Lauderdale offers several compelling reasons to check it out over at the Fort Lauderdale Collective blog.

Touring Artists, Local Shows and an Anniversary

I wish that I could go to a wedding in Kansas every weekend. Congrats to Jess and Russ. Your wedding was killer!!

Jess, beautiful bride and one of my favorite ppl in the world

I can’t be too disappointed though because flying is expensive and unpleasant and there’s a lot of cool stuff going on right here in SoFla this weekend. I just can’t make up my mind about what to do and I’m probably going to be flying solo, so I’ll try to find out what the cool kids are doing and latch on.

Tonight:
The Dialect DJ/visual art event at Brew Urban Cafe in Himmarshee tonight! Very nice!

Dialect tonight at Brew Himmarshee

Friday:
The parties are looking rad on Friday night! Sh*t Ton of Funk, Miami hip hop act Ghost Arm and Celestial Sound at Little Munich in Lake Worth. David J of Bauhaus fame at The Monterey Club in Fort Lauderdale. Everymen will release its CD (can’t find the name) at Propaganda this Friday night with support from Black Weather Shaman, Gainesville band Dirty Fist! and The Howling Winds.

Everymen CD release show

Saturday:
The Monterey Club celebrates its one year anniversary. Can you believe it’s only been one year? The folks behind this club really deserve to party hard on Saturday.  From Monterey’s popular Tuesday night DJ parties and its huge Hukilau weekend party to its regular visits from touring and local bands, the venue has placed itself in the center of the action. Bands The Howling Winds, Everymen and Between Enemies will play and Millionaire Tramps burlesque group will perform at this celebration.

The Monterey Club turns 1

Propaganda will host a rock, punk, gypsy alt-country line-up on Saturday night. That’s Viva Le Vox, Kill Now?!, The Freakin Hott and The Darling Sweets. Sounds fun! Just around the corner, Little Munich puts up Lavola and Wolfbreaker Orchestra, a new band for me.

You won’t catch Zombies Organize in town this week. They’re gonna play a show at Gainesville venue The Laboratory on Saturday.

We Missed Y’all cause we were in Kayansas — at least we weren’t in Missouri

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. We were up in bleeding Kansas ghosthunting at the Eldridge Hotel and watching the coolest couple on the planet get married. Go Jess and Russ! Glassman, we wanted to come see Luna Rex at Dada, but we couldn’t make it because were in the midwest. That’s a good excuse, right?

Cool Happs This Weekend, Bust Out Your Cardigan and Let’s Roll

There’s going to be a free block party tonight on Himmarshee. That should keep us in party mode when there’s no holidays to celebrate. Poor House is gonna have rockabillers with Slip & the Spinouts.

Himmarshee block party

Also on Friday, Kill Now?! will play a release show for EP “See Lons Fini” at Propaganda — it’s been eons — with Black Weather Shaman and the darlings of Lavola.
If you’re like most Fort Lauderdale residents, you’re always looking for a good excuse to hang at Culture Room. Tonight, you have one. Ketchy Shuby and Fusik are gonna play with Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. Think it’s going to cost about $15 bucks, but it just might be the funkiest night of your life!

Ketchy Fusik

Mike Mineo will play Dada this Saturday night, November 6 at 11 p.m.
There was a lull, which I’m assuming had to do with Rullman being off on tour with the Dewars, but it looks like Little Munich is back in action with shows. Rullman sent me, and pretty much everyone else who obsesses about these sorts of things, a video of the Dewars’ tour. If you have yet to fall under the band’s spell, this might do the trick — they listen to Dolly on the road. Love it! Here it is:

Also, this weekend, there will be The Palm Beach Art & Music Festival on Clematis. Not sure what it’s all about and I won’t be up there, but….if you think you might be interested, check the link!

Next weekend, SWARM, a warehouse party put on by Black Locust Society, will be back in action. I won’t be able to attend because I am previously engaged, but I highly recommend that you check out this hopping party on the western edge of Lauderdale if you get the chance. Last month’s discovery of Jacksonville band Chicken & Whisky made the night! The Shakers, Everymen and CESCHI will perform.

Swarm 4, and you're invited

Zombies and Not Zombies and Blond Fuzz at Poor House, Fri, October 29

Blond Fuzz Poor House

Allrighty then. On Friday night, we missed the nightmare party at IWAN. Boo! It’s tough to get out in a timely manner on Friday evenings when you’re cooking dinner late and recovering from weekday trials.  We did, however, make it out to Poor House to catch what was billed as the “last chance to see”  Blond Fuzz . We’ve been following this band for a long time, so there’s no chance we were going to miss that. Despite Halloween-weekend rumors, wildly entertained even by this very blog, that the band’s members had become zombies, we were not surprised to discover that Jeff, Jordan and Dave are all still very much alive. If you want to see what they’re up these days to and visit links to related content, check out the band’s Facebook page. For Friday night’s show, we were front and stage left at Tommy’s bar with earplugs in, so we had a nice vantage point and the perfect equipment to keep our eardrums from getting rocked beyond repair. The set was hot. The crowd was lively — not the craziest we’ve ever seen, but still pretty good. It was one of those nights when Poor House does what Poor House is supposed to do.  Love this smoky pic. Do you like Jordan’s new look?

Blond Fuzz through a smoky haze

We totally missed Moonfest, which was lame of us, but Friday night wiped me out so completley that I had nothing left to give to Saturday. Think we might throw on some last-minute costumes and head over to the Monterey Club, where MikeyRamirez and Jasper are DJing a zombie prom TONIGHT. I had no intention of doing Halloween this year, but maybe…
